What the garment is and where it came from
Polar fleece is a soft, napped, insulating polyester fabric. Malden Mills developed it in Massachusetts in 1979. It began as Synchilla, co-developed with Patagonia, to mimic and surpass wool.
How it works, in terms someone would actually use
It traps air in lofted fibres to hold heat. It sheds water but loses insulation when wet. It builds static. It sheds microfibres in every wash.
What it gets right
It is soft, napped and insulating. It is light for its warmth. It is hydrophobic. Its gsm variants let users match weight to function.
What it does not
It does not insulate when wet. It does not resist static. It does not prevent microfibre shedding. It does not drape like wool or breathe like cotton.
What it changed
It decoupled insulation from weight and animal fibre. It made synthetic warmth cheap, scalable and democratic. It shifted outerwear from protection to layering.
Who it is for, and who it is not
It is for hikers, climbers, campers, commuters and casual wearers who prioritise dry-weather warmth, packability and affordability. It is not for sailors, rainforest trekkers, studio musicians or microplastic-conscious launderers.
