The Puma Speedcat is a racing shoe released in 1999. It was developed from Dominique Zhang’s 1984/85 driver-specific model. It used fireproof lining and premium calfskin or kangaroo leather. In 2000, Puma launched a lifestyle version in mid-top and low-top variants, substituting normal leather and suede and removing the fireproof lining. Its popularity helped popularise low-profile sneakers with very thin soles.
It was built for racing—not fashion—and launched as such in 1999.
