Massimo Osti pioneered garment dyeing—the first industry-revolutionising innovation he introduced. He applied dye to finished garments, not raw fabrics. Different materials in one garment reacted differently to the same dye bath, producing tone-on-tone effects. His rubber coating made wool and linen waterproof and altered their look and feel. Stone Island’s 1982 debut used fabric inspired by truck drivers’ tarps. The 'used' look of that two-tone, reversible fabric came from stone washing.
