PrimaLoft isn’t clothing—it’s the first synthetic insulation that refuses to quit when soaked.
PrimaLoft is a synthetic microfiber thermal insulation material developed for the U.S. Army Research Laboratory in Natick, MA in 1983 to replace goose down in cold, wet conditions. It was engineered to match down’s weight, compressibility, and warmth while retaining insulating capability when wet. Patented as 'synthetic down' in 1986, it became PrimaLoft ONE and was commercialised by Albany International Corp. in 1988. The first garment using it appeared in 1989 via L.L.Bean. By 1990, its dry performance was confirmed as similar to down—but its wet performance was superior.
